Martin Sigma Japan SD45J Brazilian

c1994 Martin Sigma SD45J

Here’s a rarer Sigma made in Japan, from a series featuring torch headstocks that was made by Terada for Kurosawa Gakki. It is a 45-syle D with laminated Brazilian rosewood back and sides. Not too much in general is known about these guitars, and there appears to be some variations in specs even within the same models. This one for example only has the Martin logo on the back of the headstock, while others are branded as Sigma by Martin.

Specs / Measurements

  • c1994

  • Solid spruce top / laminated Brazilian rosewood back and sides

  • ~1.68” nut

  • ~25.5 string length

  • ~2.19” string spacing at saddle

  • 45-style trim

  • Torch inlay on head stock

  • Gold Gotoh tuners

  • Original Martin-branded hard case.

Condition / Setup Notes

Excellent(-); The guitar remains in great shape for its age. It retains its overall luster, with various impressions / worming in the top visible in raking the light. The back and sides are fairly clean. There are some minor cracks in the binding, String height is about 6/64”-4/64” with light relief good for strumming. The case has a slight break by one of the latches, but is in good working order. On the heel there is a Martin logo’ed piece of spruce, along with the serial number, glued on to the heel. It says SD45 and omits the J, but the rosewood used on this one clearly makes it a SD45J

***

A very nice guitar, and once in hand you might just assume it was a Martin D based on the playability and sound if you didn’t know. This particular one is also nice in that the visible branding is solely Martin. A nice option for 45-style trim and the looks of Brazilian rosewood.
