Alex Bishop Fan Fret Gypsy Jazz

2015 Alex Bishop Fan Fret Gypsy Jazz

Quite a departure from the traditional Gypsy jazz / Selmer Maccaferi style guitar, made by English luthier Alex Bishop. This one has a fan fret / multi scale, contemporary rosette, arm bevel, and side sound port. Only one of four fan fret Manouche guitars from this builder whose commissioned works begin at £7500, over $10,000 at this time.

Condition / Setup Notes

Very Good; The guitar remains in great shape in that there is limited general wear, even with its very delicate finish. There is however a hump at the end of the fretboard, bass side; with its high action typical of this style of guitar, it does not buzz out, but it bears mentioning. Currently set up with string height about 3mm to 2.75mm from bass to treble, with moderate relief. This guitar has a truss rod, although access looks tricky.

***

An exotic take on a classic design, with some nice functional updates like arm bevel and sound port. The extreme fan is eye-catching, and provides for interesting opportunities to experiment with tunings and strings. It has the sort of bite you might expect from a guitar of this style, and has a unique vibe.
