Blackbird Super OM Carbon Fiber
Blackbird · 2014
If you’re the type that has yet to find a CF guitar that does it for you, the Blackbird Super OM may be a good one to try. Of the handful of specimens that have come through, they are consistently great sounding guitars, and with a unique personality all their own. To my ears there’s a large bass response while still maintaining clarity and strength in the trebles. I find that the unique character resides primarily in the trebles, with an almost banjo-like quality. It takes a pick well, but to me it shines as a fingerstyle guitar. This guitar should satisfy unplugged, but it is also equipped with a MiSi pickup system, with a rechargeable internal battery.
Specs / Measurements
2014
All carbon fiber construction
~1.8” nut
~25.5” string length
~2.28” string spacing at saddle
Stainless steel frets
MiSi pickup system with charger
Original Gator thermo plastic case
Condition / Setup Notes
The guitar remains in excellent condition, with only minimal surface wear. The string height is currently ~5/64”-4/64” and with just a touch of relief. Plays nicely and great for fingerstyle.
Additional Thoughts
To me this is one of the most successful carbon fiber guitar designs out there. It’s unfortunate that Blackbird is no longer operating, which makes these guitars harder to find. Aside from its durability against harsher environments, the sound is really all its own. It may deserve a place simply for its uniquely good tone quality and resonance.
