Shiro Tsuji 14.25” Archtop

2015 Shiro Tsuji 14.25” Archtop

A very nice compact, carved archtop from veteran luthier Shiro Tsuji. A distinctive look, with its size, refined sound holes, ebony tailpiece, and plain maple. It is called the Ohtsuka model, after the guitarist and singer Masaji Ohtsuka.

Condition / Setup Notes

The guitar remains in nice shape for its age, very good(+). There is limited superficial wear, mostly needing raking light to be apparent. There are some slight edges of the headstock where the black is missing. There is general fret wear, mostly along the B string, and lower positions of the E string, but again generally in various areas. They are however dressed cleanly, and the wear is not affecting playability. Currently set up lightly, with 10s and a plain G, with string height of just above 4/64”, to just under 4/64” from bass to treble.

***

I generally am a fan of smaller archtops like this, they have a charm all their own. This one in particular has a nice look to it, I’m especially drawn to the shape of the sound holes. I’m typically a fan of high-figure wood, but the plain maple is nice here and adds to its overall look and appeal. It’s a fully carved guitar, and has a satisfying acoustic voice in addition to its ability to be amplified.
