Bruce Sexauer JZ-14 Archtop 14”
2004 Bruce Sexauer JZ-14 Archtop 14”
Bruce Sexauer is well-known for his many years in guitar making, and primarily for his flat tops. To see any archtop that he made could be considered a rare event, but this one is a singular guitar with uncommon specs. It’s generally scaled down, with a 14” lower bout and 2.25” rims. 24.75” scale length. A satisfying experience to play as an acoustic instrument, with a great sound plugged in as well.

With its unique dimensions, this guitar will check a lot of boxes for the right person. Aside from size considerations, I’ve gravitated toward smaller, acoustic, carved archtops these days for their charming sound and character. This one certainly delivers. The carve is beautiful, with tall arches, and the varnish exudes a fineness that only a hand-applied finish can deliver. The materials also contribute to this feeling, with a top that displays medullary rays from end to end, and a dynamically figured set of maple for the back and sides. One of those guitars that is the full package.
