2016 Saul Koll RE-6F Headless Fan Fret Archtop
A very rare (under 20 made in the last 35 years) RE archtop made by Saul Koll. Originally designed for guitarist Ron Eschete, this particular one is quite nice in that it is constructed largely like a traditional archtop; it is fully hollow, the top and back are carved and the rims are bent (not all of them were configured like this). The “traditional” part ends there, including its ergonomic body shape, and add to that the multi scale and headless design.

Excellent(+); The guitar retains its luster and almost entirely free from wear. There are only spare and errant flaws that really would not photograph. In beautiful shape. Currently set up with string height about 4/64” to 3/64” from bass to treble, with just a touch of relief.

A very rare, and very cool guitar. Fewer than 20 have been made over Saul Koll’s long career, and this one stands out in its construction as a fully hollow guitar with both top and back plates carved and arched. It cuts such a unique and attractive figure too, with details like body binding that is only on the bass side, and a unique carve to match the body contours. Its overall design presents a specific point of view, and this ergonomic jazz box also incorporates a fan fret and headless design. It’s very comfortable to play, balancing well on the lap, and also a nice feel to have the neck naturally tilted up. The pickup position at the bridge is also refreshing, and makes for a nice tight bass. A beautifully made guitar that satisfies all the senses, and feels right playing many styles of music.
