Oskar Graf Cutaway Classical

2008 Oskar Graf Cutaway Classical

A rare beauty, a classical cutaway guitar from the workshop of Oskar Graf in Canada. Graf guitars don’t come available very often, there are only a few other examples that exist with a cutaway and deep heel like this one. Exquisitely made, and complete with Graf tuners, made by his brother Jorg.

Condition / Setup Notes

In considering its age and delicate finish, the guitar remains in excellent shape. There are minor imperfections that can be found throughout, although it presents very cleanly overall. There was once a K and K pickup which has been removed, and a hole remains in tail where the jack used to be. It appears one of the buttons on the tuners is a replacement. The setup is a comfortable ~3mm-2.5mm from bass to treble.

***

This is one of those guitars that exudes a fineness in hand. The top is finished so beautifully, a thin and refined layer of shellack. The Brazilian rosewood is also all class, with dark straight grain and a pleasant aroma that still remains. What sticks out most to me is the heel design in conjunction with the cutaway; the neck extends down through the cutaway, creating a playing surface along the whole range. This also cuts a nice figure from the front. The sound is even and clear, and provides a feeling of control for the player in terms of bringing out voices. Already a rare find, the builder is now retired and no longer producing guitars.
