David Morse Europa Archtop
1984 David Morse Europa Archtop
Very seldomly will you see an archtop guitar made by David Morse, who is most well-known as a maker of violins. It is exquisitely carved, with deep arches and a masterfully executed recurve; just look at the way the light creates a dark shadow in the valleys. Also of note is its 16 fret neck, both aesthetically and functionally pleasing, allowing noticeably more access while retaining its body symmetry. 16.5” wide and parallel-braced, its acoustic voice is a marvel, and the Bartolini pickup was wound especially for David Morse. One of those great occasions that the case too is as nice, the original, rare, and incredible Mark Leaf flight case.

Condition / Setup Notes
Very Good, especially in considering its age. There is a well-executed repair around the volume control knob, where the side had been crushed in. There are some scrapes and dents in the binding, and some buckle wear, and some other dings or marks. Light impressions and play wear mostly the top, a ding above the bass side sound hole. The finish is a delicate varnish, and there are other general signs of use. The string height is currently ~6/64”-3.5/64” with moderate relief.

Just a striking guitar. And it is an experience and event itself to approach the massive Mark Leaf case, to open the lid, and behold what is inside. And it has such a fineness in hand. I can’t help but mention again how beautifully carved it is, with dramatic curves. At least at the time of this writing, I have been especially drawn to the sound of parallel-braced archtops, and this is a beautiful example of one. It carries a certain depth of sound with it alongside the brightness and articulation expected from this style of guitar. It’s a dynamic instrument also, and can get a lot of volume. An exciting specimen that is rarely seen.
