Michael Lewis Wingfeather “Le Petite Rougette”
2009 Michael Lewis Wingfeather “Le Petite Rougette”
It’s a rare occasion to see a Michael Lewis archtop (even just to see one, let alone available to buy), and this one is particularly storied. It was made for the 2009 Montreal Guitar Show as part of the “Red Guitar Collection,” which was a sort of nod to Scott Chinery’s Blue Guitar collection from the 90s.

Excellent(+); The guitar is in very clean shape, with only minimal and slight surface wear despite its delicately applied finish and age. Setup currently with string height about 5/64”-4/64” from bass to treble, with just a touch of relief.
***
While Michael Lewis Wingfeather archtops are already quite scarce, this is a singular one that was made for the 2009 Montreal Guitar show as part of the “Red Guitar Collection.” The red stain is beautifully done, and there are a number of special appointments like the satinwood binding, EVO gold frets, and exquisitely carved bridge and tailpiece. The headstock is a work of beauty too, with satinwood and red accents that unify the themes. Aside from its visual appeal and rarity out in the world, there’s a lot to love about this guitar. It is a notably resonant guitar with a big and clear sound, a nice sheen to the notes. As satisfying as it is to play as an acoustic instrument, it is equipped with a Bartolini pickup and sounds great plugged in as well. The neck on this guitar is notably slim and thin, which will be a welcome feature for some.
