From the Figured Wood series, this is one of a limited run of only 150. While the official specs only noted “quilted mahogany,” there looks to be a consensus across discussions that there were a number of these that were made with sets from the illustrious “The Tree” mahogany. Indeed the degree and quality of grain varies greatly across specimens. But, with The Tree’s notoriety stemming from its distinctive looks, I believe that one look should show that the set here is a set from The Tree, with the “sausage quilt” pattern.

Condition / Setup Notes
Very Good(+); There is only light wear throughout, and largely inconspicuous without raking light. Some examples are shown in the last pictures. There is a very well-done crack repair in the back; it’s been finished over and very inconspicuous. Slight sinking of finish in raking light. It could be missed if not for the patch in the interior. It’s shown in the pictures, but is very hard to get anything to show. Slight gaps in binding at end of fingerboard. The tuner buttons have been replaced. There is a bone nut and saddle installed, which is always a nice upgrade from stock. A Baggs Dual Source has been added, also nice. Case has a slight break by the latch, but is solid. Currently playing nicely with string height just below 5/64”-4/64” from bass to treble, with a touch of relief.

A very nice example of the D40 FMG Limited, especially in that it looks to be a lucky one that received a set of “The Tree” for the back and sides. As stated above, the official designation was only for “quilted mahogany” but a quick look should indicate this is a Tree set with sausage quilt grain. After all, The Tree is recognized for its distinctive grain.
