Mark Campellone 17" Standard Custom Oval Hole

2005 Mark Campellone Standard Custom Oval Hole

This one could be considered a bit of a specimen, most conspicuously in that it has an oval hole. But then the back! An exceptionally figured set of quilted maple. Notably nice acoustic voice, with good volume and bass response.

Specs / Measurements

  • 2005

  • Spruce / Quilted Maple

  • ~1.70” nut

  • ~25.5” string length

  • ~2.12” string spacing at saddle

  • Grover tuners with keystone buttons

  • Lollar(?) floating pickup with volume control

  • Original Cedar Creek hard case

Condition / Setup Notes

Very Good(+); Overall in very nice shape, with some impressions / dings in the top that are not too conspicuous without raking light. The last pictures are an illustration. Some areas of binding that are discolored, picking marks in the pickguard, tarnishing of the pickups. There is general fret wear, most notably under the B string and then the E, but still playing nicely. Currently set up with string height just above and just below 4/64” from bass to treble, just a touch of relief, playing nicely.

***

A standout archtop, a gem from the veteran luthier Mark Campellone. Even though it’s technically from the Standard line, the custom appointments make it fairly special, and well, it feels more like a Special! The acoustic voice is robust, and has a heft that is perhaps owing to its oval sound hole design. If you’re also one to value acoustic archtops for their acoustic qualities, this one will not disappoint. And for those quilted maple enthusiasts, it’s a rarer thing to have such nicely figured pieces at this kind of width and thickness. The sides too, have such nice figure. Again, a gem.
