Japanese design stands out in the world of independent luthiery, and the Leaf Tsubaki by Yukihiko Nagasaka is no exception. There are so many details to explore. Aside from the fresh and distinctive aesthetics, it has a beautiful sound, rich in overtones while maintaining a taut and firm fundamental and responsive attack.

Condition / Setup Notes

The guitar remains in excellent shape with only minimal and minor wear to be found. The flaws are hard to spot without raking light, and it presents as a recent guitar. String height is currently about 5/64”-4/64” from bass to treble, with just a touch of relief.

The lines are so distinctive and pleasing, and there are many details to enjoy. I like the red color theme, with the Padauk as the foundation. It’s a beautifully grained and colored set, with a chatoyance that plays with the light, and a nice strip of sap wood. There is so much for the eyes to feast on, but in-hand it reminds you that this guitar was made to be played and heard, and it produces an enveloping sound that I find excels with the lighter touch of fingerstyle. At the time of writing, there is about a 2.5 year wait for a guitar from Mr. Nagasaka, making this a great opportunity to experience the wide world of Japanese luthiery.
