Keisuke Fujii SJ Fan Fret

2020 Keisuke Fujii SJ Fan Fret

Another beautiful guitar from Keisuke Fujii in Japan. This is a fan fret SJ, with a less usual Panamanian rosewood utilized for the back and sides. This guitar is largely about the details, and has a some nice touches like the continuous back through the heel, sculptural magnetic truss rod cover, and fine purfling work. I have always loved the mosaic rosettes from Fujii, and this one is no exception.

***

There is such a design sense on display in Keisuke Fujii’s guitars. While the lines speak for themselves, something I always like to point out is the truss rod covers. They are functional sculptures in miniature, that are easy to grasp and attach and release smoothly via a magnet. I also love the back-through neck heel and mosaic rosette on this one. I find that it excels as a fingerstyle guitar. Perhaps on account of the multi-scale fretboard, the trebles have a pliable feel and thick sound to them, and there is a nice tautness that remains in the basses. Melodies come out with ease and it provides a good sense of multiple voices. I have become a big fan of Keisuke Fujii’s work and look forward to more to come.
