Gibson Montana Chet Atkins Studio CE
2004 Gibson Montana Chet Atkins Studio CE
A rarer variant of the Chet Atkins nylon string from Gibson. This one was made in the Montana shop under the supervision of Ren Ferguson. It’s a nicely designed model, with a traditionally fan-braced top over a hollow, carved out back. There’s a sound hole in the back, which makes for a unique look while providing a satisfying acoustic sound.

Condition / Setup Notes
Very Good; The guitar overall presents fairly cleanly, without too much surface wear in the way of scratches and things. It does show some signs of its 20 odd years, with finish checking throughout and sinking lacquer lines along the neck. The worst is shown in the last picture. Setup to play easily, with string height currently about 2mm on the bass, and just under 2mm on the treble side, with only a touch of relief. The case is an Italian VGV, a cool one that could be considered something of an upgrade.
***
This Chet Atkins model made in Montana under Ren Ferguson is one of the more distinctive offerings with a full hollow body, traditional classical bracing, and a sound hole in the back. While it provides a surprising and satisfying amount of sound unplugged, there is a comprehensive pickup system in it also, with a 4-band EQ. Something of a rarity out there also, it’s a great example of the types of guitars that have become synonymous with Chet Atkins.
