Douglas Ching Classical Brazilian Rosewood
1987 Douglas Ching Classical Brazilian Rosewood
A very nice guitar from the workshop of Douglas Ching during his years in Hawaii. A well-worn guitar, but plays and sounds beautifully and represents an incredible value based on the condition and work history.

Condition / Setup Notes
Good(+): The guitar has had a new fretboard installed with EVO gold frets, by luthier Maxwell Sipe in its recent life. There is now a tiny bit of an elevation on the fingerboard as well. This work means that the guitar plays very well currently, with a string height about 3mm to 2.5mm from bass to treble, a good saddle height, and very straight neck with minimal relief. The top has clearly been repolished, and it’s possible that the back and sides have also received some touch up. There are two stabilized cracks along each side of the fingerboard. A repaired crack in the headstock slot, and a small chunk missing from the headstock tip.
***
The guitar has clearly been played in its life, and in terms of sound has benefitted greatly from this. The new fingerboard is also a considerable positive aspect, with the nice fret wire (which can no longer be obtained) and expert work from a notable luthier. The Brazilian rosewood on the guitar exhibits top-shelf classic straight grain, and for fans of good wood this alone may be worth the price of admission. This guitar represents an incredible value based on its cosmetic condition and work history. Both the sound and playability are beyond what you would normally expect in this price range. A perfect specimen for someone who just wants a great instrument and is not concerned with cosmetics.
