D’Aquisto Teardrop DQTD

c2005 D’Aquisto DQ-TD Teardrop Archtop

Here is an archtop with an iconic shape, the D’Aquisto Teardrop. This one was made by Aria in Japan during the 2000s when the company released a line of tributes to the legendary archtop builder James D’Aquisto.

Specs / Measurements

  • c2005

  • Solid spruce top (pressed) / layered figured maple back and sides

  • Ebony tailpiece, bridge, pick guard, fingerboard

  • ~1.7” nut

  • ~24.5” string length

  • ~2.1” string spacing at saddle

  • Gotoh tuners with ebony buttons

  • Original branded, fitted hard case

Condition / Setup Notes

The guitar is in very clean shape overall, with some marks in the sharp extended horn of the body (as may be expected), a few small dimples in the top, and a small dent in the binding that I could not really get to photograph. There may be some other very minor wear if searched but really in very nice condition.

The original owner had a custom piece made for the bridge, that provided a greater differential in string height from the bass to treble side (which is measuring at an easy 5/64"-3/64"). It was made in a very attractive wood that provides a nice color offset, perhaps Brazilian rosewood or Cocobolo. The original ebony piece is also included in the sale, as is the original hard case.

***

These D’Aquisto reproductions are very nice guitars in general, and this one is no exception. There may be a feeling of bias against a pressed top and laminate body, but this guitar has a big, clear voice, and is a fine acoustic guitar. Aside from its quality as a musical instrument, it’s no easy task to find a guitar crafted in the image and spirit of the D’Aquisto Teardrop, at any price point.
