Steve Andersen Model 17 Archtop
1998 Steve Andersen Model 17 Archtop
Even before his retirement, Andersen guitars were in high demand and not seen on the used market too often. This one is a great example of his work, with a very nice acoustic voice.
Specs / Measurements
1998
Spruce (Adirondack?) / Figured maple back and sides
~1.73” nut
~25.25” string length
~2.16” string spacing at saddle
~17” lower bout
Ebony tail piece
Lollar floating pickup
Original TKL arched hard case
Condition / Setup Notes
The guitar remains in excellent condition overall. There’s minimal surface wear, but it shows some signs of age in the form of finish checks, light fret wear, and some bubbles around the tuner bushings. Still, for a guitar this age it presents very cleanly. The guitar was originally made as a purely acoustic instrument, with the floating Lollar added later. Setup currently with string height just above 4/64”-3/64” from bass to treble, and playing comfortably. Minimal relief. I find it responds well to fingerstyle playing in addition to the pick.
***
Steve Andersen is no longer making guitars, and his work doesn’t show up too often on the used market. As they say, owners tend to be keepers. This one was made originally without electronics, and it indeed has a notably good acoustic voice. Nicely figured woods, a thin finish, and well-made in accordance with the builder’s high reputation.
