Skytop GA Pernambuco Multiscale

2022 Skytop Grand Auditorium Multiscale

A specimen guitar to say the least, from its design to the materials used. Perhaps the most prominent detail is the lack of soundhole in the top; instead there are two large soundholes in the bass side, both upper and lower bout. The other holes in the top are also eye-catching, Teredo hole spruce. More on that below. Rounding things out is a set of pernambuco back and sides, a wood that is highly valued for both its rarity and musical qualities.

***

First, the Teredo hole spruce. These holes are caused in marine woods by a creature that is colloquially called a ship worm. Teredo navalis is the scientific name, and it is reality a clam and not a worm. They burrow tunnels into marine woods, and this top comes from such salvage. Very cool story. The back and sides also a rare wood, pernambuco, known more for its exclusive use in making orchestral bows. The fundamental design of the soundholes in the side direct more sound toward the player, which makes for a nice playing experience. Overall a nice and unique guitar, with unusual and rare materials.
