Michael Bashkin “Great Wave” OM
2007 Michael Bashkin “Great Wave” OM
This guitar made a bit of a splash when it was first introduced, and feeling fortunate to now have it here. It has the distinctive Hokusai-inspired “Great Wave” inlay in the headstock (done by Jimmi Wingert), but of course the dramatically colored and grained Brazilian rosewood and tightly-grained Adirondack top make it quite memorable also.

Excellent(+); The guitar is in beautiful shape, exceptionally clean, with only errant and very minor wear; hard to believe it is approaching 20 years. Currently set up with string height about 5/64” to 4/64” from bass to treble, with just a touch of relief. Playing nicely.
***
Michael Bashkin’s guitars are in high demand, and now carry a lengthy wait time; when handling instruments like this one, it’s easy to see why. This particular one is also special, having graced the cover of American Lutherie (Winter 2017), and is remembered by more than a few lucky players who at one point had it in their hands. This is one of those guitars that delivers it all, from good looks (details even down to the nice, thick purfling lines on either side of the bindings) to inspiring, satisfying sound. Hiroya, the player on this demo, commented “I could not find any weakness on that guitar,” a high compliment coming from a professional player who has encountered many a guitar.
