Gibson 120th Anniversary Les Paul Standard Hand Selected Top
Gibson 120th Anniversary Les Paul Standard Hand Selected Top
The 120th Anniversary series stands out to me for a number of reasons, including the non-nib fretboards, locking tuners, and the varied output options from the push/pull knobs. Of the 120th Anniversary series, there was a limited run of “hand-selected and book matched” tops, with attributions made to the specific Gibson staff that made the selection. This top is quite nice, with a dramatic dark burst, and a beautiful figure that is a sort of flame / quilt hybrid.

Condition / Setup Notes
Excellent(+); In very clean shape, especially for its age. There is no easily discernible wear. A small impression is visible in raking light, although it was pretty minor and hard to capture; it’s shown in the last picture with raking light right on it. Set up very nicely currently, with string at about 4/64”-3/64” from bass to treble, and light relief.
***
In a world full of Les Pauls, this one has a lot going on: full width frets, locking tuners, additional electronics options conveniently built into the existing knobs, and of course the hand-selected top, finished beautifully. The mahogany back, too, has been selected carefully, with tight and straight grain. It remains in such nice shape, but it’s also a great player with a nice open sound both unplugged and amplified. A stand-out example.
